今週もハロウィンにちなんだ、英語でショートストーリー「Goosebumps （怖い話）」をご紹介します！
今週は少し長めのお話し！

Story No.5 : Wristband
In certain counties, when a patient is taken to a hospital, a white wristband is placed on their left arm. These wrist bands contains the patient’s name and information. When a patients dies, a red wristband is placed on their right arm and they are taken to the morgue.
A young doctor was working the night shift. It was around 2 AM when he finished his last operation. He needed nap. He pressed the button for the elevator to heads to nap room.
He entered the elevator and there was just one other person there. He casually chatted with the woman while the elevator descended. The elevator stopped at the basement and the door opened. They saw an old man dressed in a white gown standing there. The old man was about to get in when the doctor suddenly slammed the close button.
“Why did you do that?” asked the astonished woman.
“I’ve performed a lot of operations”, replied the doctor.
“I’ve seen a lot of people die. When a patient dies, they get a red wristband placed on their arm.”
The woman was silent.
“You saw it too, didn’t you?” said the doctor. “That old man… That old man had a red wristband on his right arm.”
“A red wristband…” said the women as she raised right arm.
“You mean like this?”

ストーリー５：リストバンド
いくつかの国では、病院に運び込まれた患者の左腕に白いリストバンドを巻くそうです。このリストバンドには患者の名前や症状などの情報が記載されて、患者が死ぬと、今度は右手に赤いリストバンドが巻かれ、霊安室に運ばれるようになっています。
ある病院で、若いドクターが夜勤にあたっていました。担当していた手術を終えた時、時間はすでに深夜の2時を回っていて、とにかく疲れていたドクターは、仮眠室で少し休むためにエレベーターを呼びました。
エレベーターが到着すると、中にはすでに女性が乗っていました。その女性と何気ない会話を交わしているうちに、倉庫のフロアでエレベーターが止まり、ドアが開くと、そこには白いガウンを身にまとった老人が立っていました。その老人がエレベーターに入ろうとした瞬間、突然ドクターがエレベーターの「閉まる」ボタンを叩きつけ扉を閉めたのです。
「なんでそんなことするの？」女性が訪ねました。
「私は今まで多くの手術を行ってきた。」ドクターが返事しました。「人が死ぬのも見てきた。患者が死ぬと彼らの腕には赤いリストバンドが巻かれるんだ。」
女性は黙って、ドクターの話を聞いていました。
「あなたも見たでしょう？」ドクターが言いました。「あの老人…あの老人の右手には赤いリストバンドが巻かれていた。」
「赤いリストバンド…」j女性はそう呟きながら右手をあげた。
「これのことかしら？」

looking forward to…「Look」は見る、「Forward」は前方。直訳すると「前を向く」になりますが、そこから転じて「～を楽しみにする / 希望する」というニュアンスのフレーズになります。
casually chatted…「Casual」は「普段通り / 何気なく」という意味。「形式ばった / 公式の」という意味の「Formal」と合わせてよく使われます。
slammed…「○○を叩きつける」「勢いよくぶつける」という意味です。また、擬音のような使われ方もされます。
astonished…「ありえないことが起こったレベルの驚き」のときに使われる言葉です。ただ驚いただけでは、「Surprise」などで問題ありません。
